Cougars Take Over First Place
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- With a doubleheader sweep in a tight Great Lakes Valley Conference race, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has taken over first place by percentage points.
With a 23-4 and 6-1 victories at Drury, SIUE is now 20-10 (.667) in the GLVC and 28-13 overall. The Cougars moved ahead of Southern Indiana, 21-11 (.656) in the GLVC, which split a doubleheader Wednesday against Bellarmine, 20-11 (.645).
The top six teams advance to next month's GLVC Tournament in Sauget at GCS Ballpark. Saint Joseph's is currently in sixth just 2.5 games behind the Cougars.
Knowing that one bad day could sideline any team, SIUE came out swinging in Thursday's opener, scoring the most runs SIUE has ever scored in a GLVC game. The old record was 22 set earlier this month against Kentucky Wesleyan.
The Cougars recorded 17 hits, drew eight walks and took advantage of eight Drury errors in game one. Steve Doll drove home six runs, including a two-run homer and a three-run triple. Ryan Czyz scored six times and joined Doll and Ben Bartley with three hits each.
James Hertel threw six strong innings for his four win of the season.
Adam Tallman tossed perhaps his best game of the season, fanning seven and allowing just one hit over eight innings in game two. Cody Litteken threw the final inning in the five-run victory.
Once again, Doll provided the big hit, a two-run single in the four-run third inning.
The Cougars now have their next 10 games, the rest of the regular season, at Roy Lee Field. SIUE faces Lewis in a non-conference battle Friday at 7 p.m.
