April 8, 2007 Collins Collects Win No. 900 EVANSVILLE, IND. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Gary Collins became the 10th head baseball coach in NCAA Division II history Sunday to record 900 victories. SIUE defeated Southern Indiana 9-4 in the first game of a a doubleheader, a Great Lakes Valley Conference game. USI spoiled the nightcap with a 6-0 win over the Cougars. Collins joins only five other active NCAA Division II coaches who have 900 or more victories. The list includes Tommy Thomas (39 years at Valdosta State), Joe Roberts (27 years at Armstrong Atlantic), Mike Metheny (26 years at Southeastern Oklahoma), Dean Bowyer (32 years at Minnesota State-Mankato) and Irish O'Reilly (28 years at Lewis). In 29th season, Collins has recorded four 40-win seasons, including last season. His accomplishments include 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, five College World Series appearances and two GLVC titles. His overall record now stands at 900-605-7. Only four other coaches other than the six active coaches listed previously have posted 900 coaching victories. SIUE's path to collecting No. 900 for Collins was one of the come-from-behind fashion. SIUE was down 2-1, took a 4-2 lead with a three-run rally in the fourth and was tied in the bottom of the seventh. The Cougars reeled of five runs in the next two innings to improve its GLVC record to 12-8 overall. USI is now 12-7 in conference play. Daniel Thomson's two-run single ignited the four-run eighth innings which put SIUE over the top. Nick Taylor earned the victory in relief after striking out six batters in the final 2 1/3 innings. In the nightcap, Brent Wendholt tossed a four-hit shutout for Southern Indiana, now 22-11. SIUE's record now stands at 18-11. -siue cougars- |
