May 20, 2006 Jones and Cheek Named All-Region         EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville pitcher Kyle Jones (New Baden) has been named the North Central Region Pitcher of the Year.         Jones was selected to the All-North Central Region first team and senior pitcher Cameron Cheek was a second team pick.         The pair of Cougar pitchers has a combinded for a 16-4 record with 11 shutouts for SIUE, who now holds the NCAA D-II record for shutouts in a season with 21.         Jones, the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year, is 11-1 with a 0.85 earned run average. The righthander has fanned 103 batters allowing 30 walks in 84 and two-third innings pitched. Jones set NCAA D-II records this season with 54 and one-third innings consecutive scoreless innings pitched and six shutouts. Jones notched victories in six straight 1-0 games this season.         Jones picked up his 11 victory of the season this week in the NCAA Tournament in Allendale, Mich., defeating Northern Kentucky 2-0.         Cheek, who was a first team all-region pick last seaosn, has a 6-3 mark in 79 and one-third innings pitched. The Atlanta native has 47 strikeouts compared to nine walks this season with a 1.59 earned run average.         Cheek threw a five-hit complete game shutout against Quincy Friday as SIUE defeated the Hawks 1-0.         SIUE is 40-17-1 on the season, marking the first time the Cougars have reached the 40-win mark since going 41-27 in 2001.                 -siue cougars-
