May 20, 2006 Cougars Fall To Top-Seeded Lakers Allendale, Mich. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team took its first loss of the NCAA Division II North Central Regional falling to third-ranked Grand Valley State 3-1 Saturday. Jake Smith went 3-for-3 in game and Bryan Newby notched his second RBI of the tournament in the contest. SIUE, the No. 5 seed, takes on fourth-seeded Ashland Sunday at 12 p.m. EDT. The winner of that game will play Grand Valley State in the North Central Regional Championship Game at 3 p.m. SIUE's games can be heard live on SIUE's Webradio. The Cougars drop to 40-18-1 on the season, and the Lakers improve to 47-9. Even in the loss, SIUE set another NCAA record as they started the NCAA Tournament with 22 consecutive scoreless innings before giving up a run in the fifth inning. The previous best of 21 was set in 1972 by Florida Southern. SIUE gained a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI single by Newby that scored Nathan Doty. The Lakers bounced back with pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Casey Robrahn, who led off the inning with a double scored on a RBI single by Dan Skirka. The other run scored as James Hertel balked home a run with the bases loaded as Skirka scored. Grand Valley State added a single run in the eighth inning on a RBI single by Brandon Bard. SIUE put a runner on the ninth inning, but the Cougars were unable to tie the game. Clay Zavada took the loss, falling to 5-3 on the year. Zavada went four and two-third innings while giving up two runs on three hits. Hertel allowed one run in three and one-third innings. Nate McCrory tossed eight and one-third innings giving up one run on six hits with six strikeouts. McCrory improves to 8-1 on the season.
