May 18, 2006 Cougars Blank Norse Allendale, Mich. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team collected its NCAA Division II record 20th shutout with a 2-0 victory over Northern Kentucky Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II North Central Regional. The No. 5 seed Cougars will play third-seeded Quincy tomorrow at 4 p.m. EDT. That game can be heard live on SIUE's Webradio. The Hawks defeated Ashland 5-3 Thursday. SIUE improves to 39-17-1 on the year, and the Norse fall to 42-19-1. Kyle Jones tied the SIUE single-season record for wins improving to 11-1 on the season. Jones ties John Groennert (1987), Jones' high school coach at Wesclin High School, for the most wins in a single season. Jones tossed six strong innings, giving up five hits and striking out three batters. The Cougars got the scoring started off in the first inning. Ryan Czyz drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cory Bunner. Czyz went to third after error on first baseman Chris Nann of Northern Kentucky. Czyz scored on a RBI single by Jake Smith to give SIUE a 1-0 lead. SIUE added another run in the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles by Czyz and Bunner to gain a 2-0 advantage. The Norse threatened in the ninth inning as the Cougars loaded the bases with no one out. Adam Schneider, who collected his eighth save of the season, notched a pair of strikeouts before a ground out by Northern Kentucky's Matt Jones to finish off the victory. Schneider and Patrick Keller threw three innings of scoreless relief giving up one hit with four strikeouts. Schnieder's save ties a SIUE single-season team record for saves in a season with 14. The Cougars notched 14 saves during the 2001 season. Czyz was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Michael DalPozzo went 2-3 and Cory Bunner was 2 of 4 on they day.
