NKU Eliminates Cougars From GLVC Tourney
SAUGET, Ill. -- A pair of runs in the 11th inning lifted Northern Kentucky past Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 7-5 Saturday at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Tournament at GCS Ballpark. The loss eliminates SIUE, 38-17-1, from the GLVC Tournament as the Cougars will await word on a possible berth in the NCAA Tournament on Monday. Trailing the Norse 1-0 in the second inning, Bryan Newby came through with a three-run home run to give SIUE a 3-1 lead. Northern Kentucky tied the game at 3-3 with when two runs were walked home with the bases loaded. The Norse added a run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Kory Lonergan. The Cougars came back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-out two-run single by Kyle Amerson. Northern Kentucky tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the ninth inning as Matt Jones scored on a throwing error by right fielder Jeff Darnall, after Conor McGeehan singled into right field. Adam Tallman took the loss for the Cougars in relief, as he falls to 4-4 on the year. Tallman gave up two runs on two four hits in one inning of work. Clay Zavada made the start for SIUE, going three and one-third innings allowing four runs on eight hits. Jones went 5-6 with two runs scored as Northern Kentucky pounded out 17 hits. The Norse left 15 runners on base during the game. |
