Jones Named GLVC Pitcher of the Year EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Kyle Jones (New Baden), who broke two NCAA pitching records, was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year by a vote of the league's 13 coaches. Jones was joined on the GLVC first team by teammates Cameron Cheek (Atlanta) and Cory Bunner (Jacksonville). Jeff Darnall (Atlanta) was named to the second team while catcher Jake Smith (East Peoria) nabbed honorable mention honors. Jones set NCAA records for consecutive innings without giving up a run at 54 1/3 and complete game shutouts with six. The Cougar senior entered the GLVC Tournament with a 0.74 earned run average. He has struck out 90 batters in 73 innings pitched. Cheek holds a 5-2 record and a solid 1.41 ERA. In his 10 starts this season, Cheek has fired four shutouts on a pitching staff that broke the NCAA team record with 19 this season. Bunner followed up his GLVC Freshman of the Year award from a year ago with a solid performance. He is the team's leading hitter with a .319 batting average. Darnall is second in batting with a .312 mark. Smith is batting .258 and is tied with Darnall for the team lead in RBIs with 31. |
