April 23, 2006 Cougars Break NCAA Shutout Record EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball pitching staff broke the NCAA Division II record for shutouts Sunday with a 4-0 win in game one of a doubleheader sweep over Kentucky Wesleyan. It was SIUE's 17th shutout of the season. Cameron Cheek scattered seven hits and picked up his fourth shutout of the season. SIUE is No. 1 in the nation in earned run average, which now stands at 1.87 after defeating the Panthers 6-4 in the second game. The shutout record of 16 was previously held by Central Missouri State and was set last season. Arizona State holds the overall NCAA record with 24 shutouts in 70 games during the 1972 season. SIUE, winner of seven straight games and 13 out of its last 14, improved to 32-12-1 and 25-11-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. KWC had its chances of earning a bid to the GLVC Tournament dampened and fell to 20-26 and 17-23 in the GLVC. Cheek struck out six and did not walk a batter in the seven-inning game. SIUE scored twice in the second inning on RBIs by Danny Fletcher and Ryan Czyz. Jake Smith added a two-run single in the fourth inning to account for SIUE's offense, which had just six hits in game one. Adam Tallman tossed eight innings in game two and earned his fourth victory of the season. SIUE collected 10 hits in the game. Michael DalPazzo's two-run double down the left field line and Kyle Amerson's RBI single in the sixth inning proved to be the game-winner. SIUE returns to Roy Lee Field Tuesday for a GLVC doubleheader against Missouri-Rolla. The first pitch is slated for 2 p.m. -siue cougars- |
