April 22, 2006 Jones' Streak Ends, Cougars Take Two EDWARDSVILLE - Kyle Jones' consecutive scoreless innings streak may have ended Saturday, but it didn't effect the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville pitching staff's continued dominance. That would be one of two runs the staff allowed in a sweep of Kentucky Wesleyan 2-1 in nine nine innings and 3-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at SimmonsCooper Complex. The Cougars go to a season-high 18 games over .500 at 30-12-1 overall and 22-11-1 in the GLVC. The Panthers fall to 20-23 overall and 17-20 in league play. Jones gave up a leadoff single to Jordan Bonyai in the first inning of game one. After advancing to second base on a groundout, Bonyai scored on a RBI double to centerfield by Dusty Stevens. Jones has the NCAA D-II record for consecutive innings without allowing a run at 54 and one-third. Jones went seven innings giving up five hits and striking out 10 Panthers in no decision. Jeff Darnall's RBI double that scored Cory Bunner in the sixth inning tied the game at 1-1. The game stayed that way until the ninth inning, when Nathan Doty came through with a bases loaded pinch-hit single scoring Jake Smith. Patrick Keller went to 4-0 with the win. Keller threw two innings in relieve, striking out four batters. Keller and Jones have combined to allow three earned runs in 89 innings this season. In the night cap, the Cougars fell behind 1-0 on a first inning double by Stevens that scored Bonyai. Darnall tied the game with a sacrafice fly scoring Ryan Czyz in the third inning. In the fourth, Kyle Amerson notched a RBI triple that scored Michael DalPazzo. Amerson would later scored on a Seth Hall sacrafice fly to left field. Clay Zavada went five plus innings for his fourth win of the season (4-2). Zavada allowed four hits with five strikeouts. Adam Schneider picked up his sixth save of the season. Amerson went 3-6 on the day with two triples. Darnall and Jim Grant also went 3-6. Darnall had two RBIs. The Cougars will be back in action Sunday for another double header against Kentucky Wesleyan. The first pitch is set for noon at Roy Lee Field. -siue cougars- |
