April 16, 2006 SIUE Ties NCAA Shutout Record EDWARDSVILLE - Adam Tallman tossed a four-hit shutout in the nightcap as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Southern Indiana split Sunday at Roy Lee Field. It was the 16th shutout of the season for the SIUE pitching staff, tying the NCAA Division II mark set by Central Missouri State last season. SIUE ran its record to 26-12-1 overall and 21-11-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Southern Indiana is now 15-25 overall and 12-24 in the GLVC. The day did start out as happily for the Cougars. In an extra inning game, SIUE's bat went silent as Southern Indiana's Adam Vetter tossed a no-hitter and picked up a 2-1 victory. SIUE scored its only run in the third when Danny Fletcher walked and move to second on a balk. Bryan Newby moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt. Kyle Amerson's sacrifice fly to center field scored Fletcher. USI scored the winning run in the eighth when Chad Werry double down the left field line and then scored on an RBI single by Josh Malone. In the nightcap, Tallman fanned nine hitters and walked one in the seven-inning game. It was Tallman's first complete game shutout of the season and SIUE's ninth overall. Tallman lowered his season earned run average to 1.96. SIUE leads the nation in earned run average at 1.80. The Cougar offense didn't leave any doubt, however, by scoring four runs on six hits in the first two innings. Jeff Darnall's four-inning grand slam, his first home run of the season, put the game well out of reach. SIUE returns to Lee Field Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Oakland City University. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. -siue cougars- |
