Rakers Wins First Major League Game
Former Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball standout Aaron Rakers (Trenton) became the first pitcher in SIUE history to notch a major league victory as Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees 17-9 on Tuesday night.
Rakers came in during the fifth inning with the Orioles trailing 7-5. He then pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out one.
Rakers was called up to the club on Aug. 8 and then again on Sept. 5. He is 1-0 this season in 11 2/3 innings pitched giving up five runs on nine hits while striking out 10 with a 3.86 earned run average.
Rakers most recently has played for the Ottawa Lynx, the AAA affiliate for the Orioles. While with the minor league club Rakers went 5-4 with a 2.48 ERA in 47 appearances this season. The Wesclin High School graduate has notched seven saves while fanning 80 batters in 65 plus innings for Ottawa.
Rakers had been playing in the minor leagues since leaving SIUE in 1999.
At SIUE, Rakers posted a 16-7 record during the 1998 and 1999 seasons. His 192 strikeouts is fourth on SIUE’s all-time list. He became the first person in school history to record 100 or more strikeouts in a season when he fanned 109 in 1999.
The Orioles officially listed Rakers in the major league transactions on Sept. 5 as recalled RHP Aaron Rakers and C Eli Whiteside from Triple-A Ottawa; Purchased the contract of INF Ed Rogers from Triple-A Ottawa; Recalled LHP John Parrish from Double-A Bowie and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a tender left elbow.
Rakers is the third player in school history to play at the major league level. Dennis Werth played four seasons with the New York Yankees and the Kansas City Royals from 1979 to 1982. Champ Summers came up with the Oakland Athletics in 1974 and went on to play for six different teams appearing in the 1984 World Series with the San Diego Padres during his 11-year career.
