April 17, 2005 Cougars Sweep Upper Iowa, Win Sixth Straight O'Fallon, Mo.-Southern Illinois University Edwardville won for the sixth time in row sweeping a Upper Iowa 6-3 and 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. Jeff Darnall went 5-7 with two runs scored and a RBI in the two contests to raise his average to .333 on the season. SIUE improves to 20-17 on the year while Upper Iowa drops to 11-21. Adam Tallman notched the victory in game one as he threw five plus innings to pick up his second win of the season. Jake Smith and Cory Bunner each had two hits and scored two runs in the first game. Bryan Newby, Craig Ohlau, and Tallman all had RBIs in the victory. In the second game the Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead only to have the Peacocks take 4-3 advantage in the fifth inning. The Cougars battled back to take a 5-4 lead in the eighth as pinch hitter Kyle Martin doubled home a run and would later score. Upper Iowa tied the game in the top of the ninth. Cory Bunner led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single then reached third after an error by the pitcher on a pick off move. Craig Ohlau then delieverd the game-winning sacrafice fly. Jameson Sheley picked up his first win of the year with one inning of relief. Jake Smith, Jeremy Bond, Bryan Newby, and Darnall all had two hits in the contest. The Cougars will be back in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Wednesday as they travel to Kentucky Wesleyan with the first pitch coming at 1 p.m. -siue cougars- |
