April 16, 2005 Cougars Sweep Upper Iowa ALTON,ILL.-Southern Illinois University Edwardville pitcher Clay Zavada fanned 11 Peacocks as the Cougars defeated Upper Iowa 8-0 and 5-1 on Saturday at Hopkins Field. Zavada notched his first win of the year throwing a complete game five-hitter in game one. SIUE improves to 18-17 on the season while Upper Iowa drops to 11-19. Robert Rahn lead the SIUE offense as he went 3-3 with two RBI's as the Cougars pounded out 12 hits. Craig Ohlau was 2-3 with two doubles while Jake Smith and Michael DalPazzo had two hits each for SIUE. Brian Newby went 1-2 colleting two RBI's. In the second game Jared Rettberg picked his second win of the season throwing five plus innings giving up one run while striking out four Peacocks. Ryan Spuregon and Jameson Sheley came out of the bullpen and threw a three plus innings of scoreless relief. Jeremy Bond and Craig Ohlau went 2-4 each scoring a run. Jeff Darnall smashed a two-run double in the third inning that gave SIUE a 4-0 lead. Michael DalPozzo and Robert Rahn each picked up RBIs in the contest. The Cougars will take on Upper Iowa tomorrow at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, Mo. with the first pitch coming at Noon. -siue cougars- |
