April 2, 2005 Game One Boxscore Game Two Boxscore Jones Improves to 5-0 as Cougars Split with USI O'FALLON, MO. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville hurler Kyle Jones moved his record to 5-0 on Saturday with a 9-2 victory over Southern Indiana in Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball action at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. The Cougars, 12-7 overall and 7-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, lost the second game of the doubleheader 9-6 in 10 innings. Jones pitched six innings, yielding three hits and an unearned run. His earned run average is now a team-best 1.43. Jones has now given up just one earned run in his last 34 innings. The Cougars gave Jones plenty of offense unlink his last two victories, both 1-0 triumphs. SIUE pounded out 17 hits against Southern Indiana. Bryan Newby led all hitters with four. Craig Ohlau and Jake Smith had three apiece. SIUE came out clobbering Southern Indiana starter-loser Andy Rumpler, ripping four straight hits to open the game. The Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead. In the nightcap, USI rallied from two runs down to defeat the Cougars in 10 innings. The Screaming Eagles parlayed a catcher's interference call, a walk, a bunt single, a passed ball, an intentional walk and another walk into a three-run 10th inning. Both teams will play again on Sunday. This time, the teams travel to Evansville, Ind., for a 1 p.m. start. -siue cougars- |
