Baseball Looks to End Seven-Game Losing Skid
On the verge of not qualifying for the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament for the first time since joining the conference in 1995, SIU Edwardsville’s baseball team will try to halt a seven-game losing skid when it plays host to Quincy on Wednesday.
The Cougars currently sit in 10th place in the GLVC standings with a 12-30 overall record and a 9-20 mark in conference action. Only the top six teams in the conference standings advance to the GLVC Tournament in May. With only 10 conference games remaining, the Cougars would have to win out and get substantial help from others in order to qualify.
The Cougars’ most recent troubles came at the hands of first-place Wisconsin-Parkside, who swept a four-game series with the Cougars this weekend.
Craig Ohlau (Chester), the only Cougar to start all 42 games this season, leads the team offensively with a .324 batting average.
Despite being tagged with his first loss of the season against Wisconsin-Parkside, Ron Jones (Kankakee) leads the pitching staff with a 1.78 earned run average. Coach Gary Collins is looking for his young pitching staff to gain valuable experience throughout these last few weeks of the season.
“I’m looking for our pitchers to gain a little more experience,” Collins said. “We do have good starting pitching coming back next season.”
