KWC Takes Two From Cougars
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville committed eight fielding errors in Wednesday's doubleheader as Kentucky Wesleyan swept the Cougars 15-2 and 9-7.
SIUE's record is now 12-26 overall and 9-16 in GLVC play. The Cougars have 14 games left in conference play, including four this weekend against Wisconsin-Parkside. The Cougars will need to get on track soon to earn a bid to next month's six-team Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in Sauget, Ill.
At Saturday's game, SIUE will show-off the latest improvements to Roy Lee Field with an alumni event. Game time is noon with fun and games for youngsters two hours before the game.
In Wednesday's game, SIUE all but handed the Panthers the victory with five errors. Still, Kentucky Wesleyan earned the win with a 16-hit performance.
Adam Gautreau went the distance in the seven-inning game for KWC.
SIUE grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two as Joe Wargo was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double by Luke Humphrey. Wargo scored on an indfield out and Humphrey scored on a sacrifice fly by Jared Brueggeman.
KWC knocked out SIUE starter Chip Durland in the fifth inning, tagging him for three runs. The SIUE bullpen wasn't able to shut down KWC, allowing six more runs in relief.
Humphrey led the charge on offense. He lifted his season batting average to .307 with a 5-for-5 performance in the second game. That included a double, three triples and three runs scored. SIUE had 10 hits overall in game two.
