Cougars Swept at Missouri-St. Louis
SIU Edwardsville dropped both games of a doubleheader Wednesday against Missouri-St. Louis at the UMSL Baseball Field. Game scores were 2-1 and 12-2.
Game one was scoreless until UMSL's half of the sixth inning when Logan Hughes drove in Jonathan Mercer on a single. SIUE's Luke Humphrey tripled to lead off the top of the seventh, and then was driven home by a Craig Ohlau single. But UMSL answered in the bottom of the seventh on a game-winning RBI double by Mercer.
SIUE managed only four hits in game one, but it had its chances to score. The Cougars stranded 11 runners in the game, including leaving the bases loaded twice.
Jarad Rettberg was tagged with the loss after pitching 6.1 innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Picking up the win for UMSL was Josh Green, who relieved UMSL starter Blake Burnside in the seventh.
UMSL scored early and often in game two. SIUE starter Brian Keating was pulled after just one-third of an inning after allowing two runs on four hits. UMSL plated five runs in the first and led 9-0 after three innings of play.
SIUE got on the board with two runs in the fifth. Michael DalPozzo and Kyle Martin each had an RBI for the Cougars.
Keating was charged with the loss on the mound for the Cougars. UMSL starter Steven McCoy pitched a complete game and allowed two runs of five hits.
The Cougars will continue GLVC play this weekend when it travels to Northern Kentucky for doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday.
