Cougars Sweep Southern Indiana
SIU Edwardsville secured its first GLVC doubleheader sweep of the season when Robert Rahn stroked a bases-loaded single in game two of the doubleheader. The Cougars topped Southern Indiana 5-2 in the first game and 3-2 in the second game.
Prior to the scheduled doubleheader, Southern Indiana and SIUE finished the game that was called Saturday after nine innings due to darkness. After the Cougars were retired in the top of the tenth, Southern Indiana plated the winning run to take the game 7-6 (Boxscore).
SIUE (10-20, 7-10 GLVC) pitcher Ron Jones made his first starting appearance of the season in game one, pitching five innings and surrendering only two hits while picking up the victory. Jameson Sheley came in to pitch the final inning to earn the save.
SIUE scored all the runs it would need in the third inning on RBI singles by Joe Wargo, Tim Velten and Luke Humphrey.
Southern Indiana (12-22, 8-13 GLVC) starter Matt Keener stymied the Cougar offense for 11 innings in game two of the doubleheader. Keener struck out eight SIUE hitters and allowed six hits and two runs in 11 innings pitched. USI could not capitalize with runners on base as it stranded 14 runners on the day.
Humphrey and Craig Ohlau each drove in a run before Rahn's game-winning hit. Tyler Symonds, who scored the winning run, began the 12th inning with a double to right field. Two intentional bases on balls brought up Rahn who connected for the game winner.
The Cougars will next be in action Wednesday when it crosses the river to play Missouri-St. Louis. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for noon.
