Cougars Win Rain-Shortened Game
SIU Edwardsville scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning and cruised to a 10-5 victory over Lewis today in a rain-shortened game at Roy Lee Field. The game was called after the bottom of the fifth inning. The second game of the doubleheader was called as well.
Lewis (9-15, 3-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference) jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first in an inning that featured and error and two wild pitches.
SIUE (7-17, 4-7 GLVC) answered with a run in the bottom of the first on a Craig Ohlau RBI single.
After Lewis scored two more in the second, SIUE moved five runs across the plate in its half of the second. Robert Rahn and Kyle Martin each singled, then Luke Humphrey plated them both with a three-run homerun to left field. Ohlau then earned his second RBI on the day with a single and the Cougars moved another run across on an error.
The Cougars scored three more times in the third inning. Martin lined an RBI double to right field and Eric Tritsch had a two-run single to center to make the game 9-5. Martin drove in another run in the fourth inning to move the game to 10-5.
Meanwhile, the Cougar bullpen allowed only one hit in three innings of relief. Ron Jones relieved SIUE starter Ryan Spurgeon in the third inning. Jameson Sheley retired Lewis in the top half of the fifth inning to make the game official. In between innings, heavy rain forced the cancellation of the game.
Martin ended the day 3-for-3 with two RBI. Rahn also had three hits on the day. Humphrey and Ohlau each had two hits for the Cougars.
SIUE will be in action Wednesday and Thursday when it plays host to Missouri-St. Louis at Roy Lee Field. First pitch for both games is slated for 2 p.m.
