Cougars Settle for Split at Quincy
Despite three consecutive home runs from Jared Brueggeman (East Alton) in Wednesday's game one, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville lost game one of a doubleheader to Quincy 6-5. SIUE took the nightcap 10-6.
With the split, SIUE is now 5-16 overall and 2-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Quincy moved to 17-9 and 9-3. SIUE Coach Gary Collins is now one win away from career victory No. 800. His next opportunity is Saturday at home against Lewis. Game time is noon.
Batting in the No. 8 spot in game one, Brueggeman belted homers and accounted for all five of SIUE's runs batted in. He hit solo home runs in the second and sixth and a three-run shot in the fourth inning.
SIUE held a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning before Quincy rallied for two runs to tie the game. Brueggeman's third homer in the sixth gave SIUE a 5-4 edge before Quincy used a solo homer from first baseman Jamie Simmons to once again tie the score.
Quincy's Kevin Reynolds ripped an infield single off the body SIUE reliever Jarad Rettberg, allowing Kevin Sewell to score the game-winner in the seventh.
In the second game, SIUE thumped Quincy pitching for a season-high 18 hits. Eric Tritsch led SIUE with four hits while six other Cougars had multiple hits. For a team which has struggled to score this season, SIUE scored in seven of nine innings in the game.
Ron Jones picked up the win in relief of Adam Tallman, who was taken out in the fifth inning. Jameson Sheley allowed just one hit in the final three innings to pick up a save.
