SJC Sweeps Cougars
SIU Edwardsville dropped both games of a doubleheader today against Saint Joseph's College at Roy Lee Field. The Cougars fell in game one 6-4 and game two 6-1.
SIUE (2-12, 1-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference) scored once in the first inning of game one on a Wes Pickering sacrifice fly. It pulled ahead 2-0 when Jared Brueggeman drove home Pickering with a single in the fourth.
Meanwhile, SIUE starter Kyle Jones was holding Saint Joseph's in check until the fifth inning. He walked SJC's Mike Victor to begin the inning then was pulled for Pat Evers. Victor later scored to cut the SIUE lead to 2-1. It was the only run charged to Kyle Jones, who allowed three hits and struck out three batters on the afternoon.
Saint Joseph's (6-7, 3-1 GLVC) broke it open in the top half of the seventh. Garrett Guest doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on an error by Evers. Victor cleared the bases with a bases-loaded triple. He later scored on a Jameson Sheley passed ball to give the Puma's a 6-2 advantage.
SIUE tried to mount a comeback in its half of the seventh inning. Luke Humphrey plated Brad Scott on a fielder's choice and Brueggeman scored Pickering to move the game to 6-4.
SIUE again came out strong in game two, scoring once in the first inning on a Pickering RBI double. But SIUE starter Ryan Spurgeon allowed a bases-loaded walk and Saint Joseph's moved across another run on a double-play ball to take a 2-1 lead in the third inning.
Saint Joseph's Mike Stawski pitched eight innings for the Puma's, allowing one run on four hits. The Cougars stranded 12 base runners in game two, which included leaving the bases loaded in the fifth and seventh inning.
Former basketball player Ron Jones saw two innings of relief in his baseball debut. He allowed a run on two hits and struck out three.
The Cougars will be in action again on Wednesday in a GLVC doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
