Cougar Baseball Picked to Finish Tied for Second in GLVC
Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball coaches have picked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to finish tied for second this season in the 11-team league.
SIUE is coming off a second-place finish in GLVC play last season with a 17-13 record in league play. The Cougars finished the season 24-26 overall.
Coach Gary Collins said the GLVC's addition of 10 games to the league schedule should make pitching a premium. All 11 teams play one another four times for a 40-game league schedule. In previous season, every team played one another a three-game series.
"Those extra 10 games are going to make a difference," said Collins.
The Cougars did not receive any first-place votes and finished behind defending champion Missouri-St. Louis and Indianapolis in the voting.
"That should be motivation for them," Collins said of his 2004 team.
SIUE opens the season on February 27 at Missouri Southern State in Joplin, Mo.
