Cougars Top UMSL
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville picked up a much-needed Great Lakes Valley Conference win today, defeating the Rivermen of Missouri-St. Louis 7-6 at Roy Lee Field.
Ryan Spurgeon threw seven strong innings and Jarrod Peters held off the Rivermen during the final two innings to earn the save.
SIUE (18-21 and 11-11 in the GLVC) led 7-3 going into the ninth inning, but Missouri-St. Louis (28-11, 16-5 GLVC) made it interesting.
Tony Grana hit a two-run double to left field and Jason Barron was hit by a pitch to drive in another run. But Peters struck Aaron Brown to end the game and give the Cougars the 7-6 victory.
Joe Wargo went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and Craig Ohlau drove in two to lead the Cougar offense. Jason Kessler and Justin Baecht each added two hits for the Cougars.
The Cougars' next action will be Friday against Indianapolis at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Ill. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
