Cougars Double Up Quincy 10-5
After not scoring in the first inning of 18 consecutive games, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville coach Gary Collins was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to happen again.
SIUE, 13-12 overall and 7-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, scored just once in the first and rallied Wednesday at Roy Lee Field for a 10-5 victory over Quincy.
The Cougars scored five more runs in the second inning and did not fall behind after that. Jason Kessler (Mattoon) led the Cougars with four hits and four runs batted in. He improved his season batting mark to .415.
SIUE tallied 16 hits while its GLVC record evened out to .500.
Wayne Austraskas powered the Quincy offense with two home runs.
David Briesacher (Waterloo) hurled 6 1/3 innings for the victory. He struck out four. Jeff Ebeler (Waterloo) picked up the save and didn't allow a run in the final 2 2/3 innings.
SIUE's next action is Friday at Lee Field against Oakland City in a non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
