Cougars Gain Split
SIUE baseball dropped a 10-8 Great Lakes Valley Conference contest to Wisconsin-Parkside today before claiming a 6-3 victory in the seven-inning nightcap.
The Cougars led 7-2 at one point in game one, but they couldn't contain the potent Ranger offense. Wisconsin-Parkside plated five runners in the bottom half of the seventh, including right fielder Aaron Lopez' three-run double.
Starter Jarad Rettberg pitched 5-1/3 innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on two hits. He struck out three and walked four.
Reliever Ryan Spurgeon was tagged with the loss after pitching one inning and giving up a hit and a run.
First baseman Jason Kessler went 2-4 from the plate with one RBI. Justin Baecht went 1-4 with two RBIs.
The Cougars came back from a 2-0 deficit to take game two of the doubleheader, which was counted as a non-conference game. Luke Humphrey's double drove in two runs in the Cougars' fifth as the Cougars scored four runs in the inning to take the lead.
Reliever Kyle Jones picked up the victory for the Cougars, pitching three innings and allowing one run on three hits.
SIUE is now 8-10 overall and 3-5 in GLVC play.
The Cougars' next action will be against first-place Missouri-St. Louis on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at Roy Lee Field.
