Baseball Grabs No. 4 Seed to GLVC Tournament
Turn the bus around. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is heading back to Highland Hts., Ky.
After completing a three-game series on Sunday with Northern Kentucky, SIUE returns to the Norse's home field on Thursday for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. SIUE, 28-22, is the No. 4 seed and faces third-seeded Missouri-St. Louis in the opening round at 4 p.m. Top seeded Northern Kentucky plays sixth-seeded Lewis at 10 a.m. while second-seeded Indianapolis plays No. 5-seeded Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m.
The double-elimination tournament runs through Sunday.
Chad Opel (Edwardsville) powers the offense for the Cougars. The senior shortstop holds a .429 batting average and is the lone player to have started all 49 games. Opel leads SIUE in hits (78), runs (51) doubles (19) and stolen bases (10).
Wes Pickering (Springfield, Mo.) is the only other Cougar batting better than .300. Pickering is hitting .331 and has played several positions this season for the Cougars. He heads into the GLVC Tournament as the team's second baseman.
After Nick Seibert (Edwardsville) suffered a hand injury earlier this season, the pitching duties have fallen to freshman Jarad Rettberg (Divernon) and senior Eric Meyer (Topeka). Rettberg is 5-2 with an earned run average of 3.29 while Meyer is 6-2 with a 3.31 ERA.
