May 4, 2002 Cougars Strand 28 in DH Loss HIGHLAND HTS, Ky. - The lack of timely hitting hurt as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball was swept at Northern Kentucky 10-8 and 3-1 Saturday. SIUE (27-22, 15-12 Great Lakes Valley Conference) stranded 28 baserunners in the doubleheader with 13 in a seven-inning game for starters and 15 in a nine-inning nightcap. The Cougars hope to pick up one win Sunday in a noon single game against the Norse, who hope to be the No. 1 seed and host for the GLVC Tournament next week. NKU is currently 31-21 overall and 21-7 in the GLVC. SIUE's bats certainly were not quiet Saturday with 15 hits in the 10-8 loss. While SIUE spread out its runs, sscoring in six of seven innings, NKU used the big inning to dispose of the Cougars. NKU scored four runs in the first and rallied for six runs in the sixth inning. Northern Kentucky's Chris Unkraut outdueled SIUE's Jarad Rettberg (Divernon) in game two. Unkraut allowed 13 hits and struck out nine. Rettberg scattered eight hits and fanned four.
