Cougars Sweep Wisconsin-Parkside
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team took control and beat University of Wisconsin-Parkside in both games of their Saturday doubleheader. The Cougars (24-18, 12-8 GLVC) defeated Wisconsin-Parkside (10-20, 7-12 GLVC), 2-1 in the first game and 4-3 in the nightcap.
Wes Pickering picked up game-winning RBI in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly. Brad Hinton was the winning pitcher for the Cougars, going five innings. Eric Meyer picked up his fourth save with one-inning of relief.
The Cougars trailed Wisconsin-Parkside 1-0 until the sixth inning of the second game when SIUE rallied for three runs. Jason Kessler's two-run double was followed by an RBI double by Luke Humphrey.
Wisconsin-Parkside chipped away at the lead with one run in the eighth and one more in the ninth. Brian Rehm hit a sacrifice fly to tie the score.
The winning run scored in the bottom of the ninth as Zach Wooley drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Kessler from third.
SIUE will do battle again with Wisconsin-Parkside on a Sunday doubleheader at Roy Lee Field at noon. Game one will be a conference game while the nightcap is slated for a non-conference match.
