Spurgeon Helps Cougars to Split

After a rough first inning, pitcher Ryan Spurgeon (Bethalto) settled down and did not allow any runs in the final six innings, helping Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to a split with Rockhurst Saturday at Roy E. Lee Field.
Spurgeon and the Cougars won the nightcap 5-3 after falling 9-8 in game one.
The Cougar pitcher may have been able to get our of Rockhurst's three-run first inning but SIUE's Mike Bowen (O'Fallon) misplayed a fly ball, which led to the Hawks jumping out to an 3-0 lead.
SIUE, 15-13, scored twice in the first inning off RBIs from Josh Cate (Imperial, Mo.) and Jason Kessler (Mattoon). Kessler ripped a third-inning, two-run home run to put the Cougars up for good. Rockhurst won game one, erasing a four-run Cougar lead. Rockhurst managed 14 hits. The Cougars scored their eight runs on just five hits and three Rockhurst errors.
SIUE's returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Wednesday as it entertains Quincy. Game time is set for 1 p.m. for the doubleheader.
