Greyhounds Take Two from Cougars, Win GLVC Title
The University of Indianapolis swept two games from Southern Illinois
University Edwardsville to claim its first Great Lakes Valley Conference
Baseball championship since 1984.
After losing in the first round to Northern Kentucky, the Greyhounds
(49-13) won five straight in the six-team double elimination tournament
hosted by the Cougars (36-24).
Indianapolis won the the first game 1-0 in a pitching duel between
Indianapolis starter Chad
Kauffman and SIUE's Nick Siebert (Worden, Kan.). Siebert, starting his
first game since
April 22, gave up two hits and one unearned run in seven innings. Kauffman
allowed four hits in his first shutout of the season.
The only run of the game came for the Greyhounds the third inning without
getting the
ball out of the infield. Nick Nell reached second base on a throwing error
to lead off. He then advanced to third on a ground ball to the pitcher,
and scored on a wild pitch.
The Cougars' best chance of scoring came in the second inning. Dave
Crouthers (Edwardsville) started the inning with a single to left field.
Josh Cate then reached on a fielder's choice when the Greyhounds tried to
get Crouthers out at second on a ground ball. Jason Kessler's sacrifice
attempt was caught by the catcher and Crouthers was then doubled off
second to stifle the Cougar rally.
Indianapolis won the second game 6-2 to clinch the GLVC championship
despite being out-hit by the Cougars 14 to 5.
On the day, the Greyhounds converted seven hits into seven runs and two
wins.
Indianapolis took a 3-0 lead after three innings. The Cougars scored on in
the fourth and fifth but stranded a total of 12 runners, including two
each in the eighth and ninth.
The Cougars must now await word on Monday from the national selection
committee to
see if they will be chosen for the NCAA-II North Central Regional
tournament.
