Late Rally Not Enough to Overcome Early Errors
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team's five run
eighth inning was not enough in a 11-9 loss to visiting Lindenwood
University.
The Cougars (30-19) committed five errors in the game, which translated
into six unearned runs for the Lions.
Lindenwood (25-16) scored a run in the top of the second inning on no
hits, two errors and a wild pitch to go ahead 4-0. They scored again in
the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take an 11-4 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth inning the Cougars pounded out five runs on
five hits bring the score to 11-9. Josh Cate (Imperial, Mo.) led off the
inning with a walk and was later forced out at second on a fielder's
choice.
The Cougars then had five consecutive hits, starting with Luke
Humphrey's (Rantoul) single. He was followed by RBI singles to left
field by Chad Opel (Edwardsville) and Mark Bugger (Edwardsville). Dave
Crouthers (Edwardsville) then hit a third single to left field to load the
bases. Nick Seibert (Worden) then hit a three-RBI double to the wall in
left field for the Cougars final runs of the game.
Six different Cougars went to the mound, with D.R. Berry getting the
loss after giving up four runs, two of which were unearned, in two
innings. Mark Quisenberry (Marquette Heights), Jon Huber (Witt) and Bret
Giaudrone (Gilespie) combined for three and one-third shutout innings of
relief.
