SIUE Baseball Edges Bellarmine in Extra Innings
(EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) Nick Seibert's only hit of the day turned out to be the one the Cougars needed. Seibert's game-winning single in the bottom of the 14th inning pushed the Cougars past Bellarmine 3-2, extending their winning streak to 11 consecutive games this afternoon at Roy Lee Field.
Bellarmine got on the board first, scoring its first run of the game in the first inning. The Cougars answered with one run in the third and one in the fifth before the Knights tied the game in the sixth. Both starters had strong outings today, pitching 10 innings and allowing two runs, one earned. Dave Crouthers threw 10 innings, scattering four hits and striking out eight batters. Peter Kuhn pitched 11 innings for the Knights, giving up 12 hits and fanning seven batters.
Bret Giaudrone picked up the win, pitching a solid four innings of relief. Giaudrone, now 7-1 on the year, gave up only two hits while striking out six batters. Peter Kuhn received the loss, pitching 2 and two-thirds innings and giving up three hits.
Mark Bugger drove in the first run of the game with a single to leftfield to score Luke Humphrey. Bugger finished the day 3-for-6 and pushed his career hits total to 312, which ties him at No. 4 on the NCAA career hits list with Mark Altobeela, of Lewis University.
Along with a great pitching performance, Crouthers also finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate. His single to left in the 13th inning gave him career hit No. 200, making him the ninth Cougar to record 200 or more hits.
SIUE improves to 25-15 overall and posts an 11-2 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Bellarmine falls to 8-15 overall and 4-9 in the conference.
