SIUE Baseball Edges Bellarmine in Extra Innings
(EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) Nick Seibert's only hit of the day turned out
to be the one the Cougars needed. Seibert's game-winning single in the
bottom of the 14th inning pushed the Cougars past Bellarmine 3-2,
extending their winning streak to 11 consecutive games this afternoon at
Roy Lee Field.
Bellarmine got on the board first, scoring its first run of the
game in the first inning. The Cougars answered with one run in the third
and one in the fifth before the Knights tied the game in the sixth. Both
starters had strong outings today, pitching 10 innings and allowing two
runs, one earned. Dave Crouthers threw 10 innings, scattering four hits
and striking out eight batters. Peter Kuhn pitched 11 innings for the
Knights, giving up 12 hits and fanning seven batters.
Bret Giaudrone picked up the win, pitching a solid four innings of
relief. Giaudrone, now 7-1 on the year, gave up only two hits while
striking out six batters. Peter Kuhn received the loss, pitching 2 and
two-thirds innings and giving up three hits.
Mark Bugger drove in the first run of the game with a single to
leftfield to score Luke Humphrey. Bugger finished the day 3-for-6 and
pushed his career hits total to 312, which ties him at No. 4 on the NCAA
career hits list with Mark Altobeela, of Lewis University.
Along with a great pitching performance, Crouthers also finished
the day 3-for-6 at the plate. His single to left in the 13th inning gave
him career hit No. 200, making him the ninth Cougar to record 200 or more
hits.
SIUE improves to 25-15 overall and posts an 11-2 mark in the Great
Lakes Valley Conference. Bellarmine falls to 8-15 overall and 4-9 in the
conference.
