SIUE's Cox Drafted by San Francisco Giants
(EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) Ryan Cox, the Most Valuable Player this
season for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball, has been
selected in the fifth round as the 168th pick overall by the San Francisco
Giants organization in today's Major League Baseball amateur draft.
Cox, of Stewardson, posted a 1.77 earned run average and an 8-3
record this season, which led the Great Lakes Valley Conference. His ERA
was the lowest by an SIUE pitcher since the 1975 season when Nick Baltz
threw for a 1.27 ERA. He was named first team All-Region and first team
All-GLVC as well as second team All-District All-Academic as an
engineering major at SIUE. The right-handed pitcher had been throwing fast
balls in the low 90 miles per hour range and had been viewed by a number
of scouts throughout the season.
With a four-year career at SIUE complete, Cox becomes the highest
draftee ever to play in a Cougar uniform. His career numbers were strong
as he tied the school record wins with 26 and took over the career mark
for strikeouts with 261 and innings pitched with 315 2/3. Cox also earned
All-American honors as a sophomore with a 7-4 record and a 4.25 ERA after
helping SIUE to the NCAA Division II Championships.
Cox was notified late Wednesday that his first assignment was not
certain but that it might be the in Northwest League (Class A) with San
Francisco's affiliate team -- the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in Keizer, Ore.
Cox said he believed he would know officially where his first assignment
would be by Saturday.
