Policies and Procedures
Purpose: The purpose of a tutoring program is to provide tutorial services to student-athletes needing academic assistance. This assistance may be needed for a variety f reasons including a need to understand the material presented in the classroom while the student-athlete was traveling with the team, or a need for general information for student-athletes whose educational background is insufficient in a particular academic area.

Objectives:

  • To provide individual tutoring for student-athletes according to their schedules.
  • To provide small group (< 5) tutoring for student-athletes with common academic needs.
  • To make individual tutoring available and worthwhile to the student-athlete.

    Coordination:
  • Student-Athlete Requests for Tutors: Student-Athletes may request an individual tutor through the Tutoring Coordinator ONLY if they have attempted to use existing departmental or campus tutoring services and met with professor or TA for extra help. If the student-athlete still feels they need individual tutoring or if tutoring services are not available or the student athlete may request an individual tutor, (the tutoring program is meant to supplement existing tutoring programs, NOT replace them).
  • Student-Athletes will NOT be assigned a tutor if they are not attending class regularly.
  • Due to limited tutoring budget, priority will be given to student-athletes demonstrating the most need.
  • The Tutoring Coordinator shall have the discretion to make all final decisions concerning student-athlete requests for tutors.

    Tutor Application process: Tutors can apply in person by meeting with the Tutoring Coordinator OR apply online at the link above. The application includes contact information, classes they wish to tutor, grades for those classes, overall GPA, availability, and the names and phone numbers of two references (one must be from a former professors in the subject(s) they wish to tutor).

    Tutor Selection: The selection of tutors will be made by the Tutor Coordinator and shall be based on the following criteria:
  • Verification of “A” or “B” grades in the subject areas to be tutored.
  • A written or verbal approval/ recommendation from a University instructor for that subject.
  • Needs of current student-athletes for tutoring assistance.

    Tutor Assignment: If the tutor meets all qualifications, the Tutor Coordinator will assign them to a student-athlete(s) for the appropriate courses. They will be given the student-athlete’s phone number and email (and vice versa) in order to make arrangements for tutoring sessions. They will also be given information on the mandatory training session they must attend.

    Tutor Training: At the beginning of each semester, all tutors will be required to attend a tutor-training session that is conducted by the Tutoring Coordinator. Any tutors who start tutoring in the middle of the semester will have to meet with the Tutoring Coordinator for training. Student tutors will be paid for their training time. The individual training consist of:
  • Tutor Responsibilities/ Basic Guidelines.
  • The "Do's and Don'ts of Tutoring".
  • Successful Techniques.
  • Communications Skills.
  • Referral Skills.
  • Study Skills.
  • Ethics and Philosophy of Tutoring.

    Compensation for Tutors: Student tutors will be paid $7.00 per/hour. This rate is competitive with other tutoring programs on campus.

    Evaluation Of Student-Athletes: Every other week, tutors will be required to evaluate their tutoring sessions. The evaluation must include the following and will be shared with the student-athlete and their head coach as needed:
  • Location of tutoring sessions.
  • Preparedness of the student-athlete for sessions (on-time for the session, with books, notebooks, etc, and has attempted homework and read assignments).
  • The student-athlete’s understanding of the material.
  • Recommendations.

    Evaluation Of Tutors: At the end of the tutoring semester, each student-athlete will be asked to evaluate their tutor(s). Student-athletes will be asked to evaluate their tutor(s) on the following areas:
  • Tutor’s knowledge of the subject area.
  • Tutor’s ability to teach/explain the material.
  • Tutor’s preparedness for sessions.
  • Other comments on the tutor and recommendation for further employment.

    Acceptable Tutoring Locations: All tutoring must take place in an academic setting that is free of distractions. This includes the Library, an empty classroom, designated tutoring labs, or the Vadalabene Conference Room, or study room. Tutoring MAY NOT take place in Residence Halls, Tutor’s or Student Athlete’s home or University dining areas.

    Termination of Tutor Assignment: Participating in the tutoring program as a student-athlete is a privledge. If a student-athlete is not repectful of this priviledge, a tutoring assignment may be terminated by the Tutoring Coordinator if any of the following take place:
  • Student-Athlete is continually unprepared for tutoring sessions.
  • Student-Athlete has more than two “No-Shows” for appointments.
  • Student-Athlete is not regularly attending class for which they are receiving tutoring.
