Academic Services

The office of the Academic Advisor for Athletics is located in the Vadalabene Center, where the following services are provided and/or coordinated

For more information or to make an appointment, please contact Jaci DeClue at (618) 650-3722 or jadurbi@siue.edu

Academic Advisement
Advisement is mandatory for all students prior to registration each term. Student-athletes who have not yet been accepted into a major are advised and registered by Jaci DeClue, Academic Counselor for Athletics in the Vadalabene Center. Jaci can provide information about majors or refer student-athletes to the appropriate camupus or community resources for further information. Student-athletes with declared majors are advised in the appropriate departments. Jaci also understands the pressures and special needs of student-athletes and works closely with them to monitor their personal development, satisfctory progress toward their degrees and make certain their experience at SIUE is a positive one.

Registration for Semester Courses
Since registration for subsequent semesters occurs early in the semester, it is important for student-athletes to make an appointment with either their departmental academic advisor or the Academic Advisor for Athletics in the first few weeks of the semester. An appointment is necessary for all registration sessions.

Study Table and Tutoring
Student-athletes new to the University (freshmen and transfers) and those in academic difficulty may be required by their coach to attend an athletics study hall. "Academic difficulty" is determined by the Academic Advisor for Athletics and the head coach and is a function of overall GPA, the hours passed during the previous term, and mid-term grade reports during the current term. Student-athletes having difficulty in a course should seek help as early in the term as possible. Tutoring is usually available through Instructional Services or the department offering the course. Go to link forcampus resources for more information and a campus tutoring schedule.

Mid-Semester Grade Checks
Faculty members are asked to assess the progress of all students in their classes and report to Enrollment by the end of the seventh week of the term any students needing academic intervention (AI). This information is available to advisors during the ninth week. In addition, midterm grade and attendance checks will be done twice a semester for all active student-athletes. Both the AI and the mid-semester reports are reported to coaches for appropriate action.

Monitoring of Satisfactory Progress
and Continuing Eligibility

Continuing eligibility is monitored by the Academic Advisor for Athletics and the Faculty Athletic Representative. All questions regarding eligibility should be directed to the Academic Advisor for Athletics. To be eligible to compete, a student-athlete must:

  1. Be enrolled full time (no less than 12 credit hours)
  2. Maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average
  3. Pass 24 credit hours per academic year.
  4. Pass 75 percent of required credits during the regular academic year. (for example, 24 x .75=18, thus a first year student athlete must pass a minimum of 18 credits fall and spring semester)
  5. Declare a major by your 3rd year (or 5th semester)
  6. Receive prior approval for any courses taken at other universities during the summer that are counted toward the required 24.
  7. Attend a minimum of two educational programs on wellness issues during each academic year (UNIV 112 counts as one for freshmen).
