Dr. Bradley L. Hewitt, who has served 13 years in numerous positions at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, will step in as the new Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Dr. Narbeth Emmanuel, SIUE Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, announced the appointment today. Emmanuel said Hewitt begins his duties Aug. 1 as the seventh director of athletics in the school's history.
"Brad brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this position. I expect a smooth transition for Brad. He is a focused individual who has proven several times that he can be successful no matter the task," Emmanuel said.
Hewitt's task will be to guide a successful athletic program with several teams and individuals who have provided national recognition for SIUE. He inherits an athletic program which has won 16 national championships.
Hewitt is familiar with a number of the coaches on SIUE's staff. He previously served as SIUE's assistant athletic director under Jones from 1989 to 1994. In 1994, Hewitt served as the University's Venue Manager for the United States Olympic Festival-'94 track & field and wrestling events.
Since 1994, Hewitt has held several positions at SIUE, including Acting Chief Executive Officer of the SIUE Foundation (1998-2000), adjunct professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education (1996-present), and the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development and Public Affairs (1994-1998 and 2000-present).
Hewitt has been an internal and external liaison for the Vice Chancellor of Development and Public Affairs, overseeing the operating units of Alumni Services, SIUE Foundation, Public Affairs, Photographic Services, and University Graphics, Publications and Printing.
Hewitt has a strong background in intercollegiate athletics. Before coming to SIUE, he was the director of sports marketing at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa; the recruiting coordinator and assistant football coach at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and an assistant football coach at his alma mater Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo.
Hewitt earned a bachelor's degree in Mathematics in 1981 from Central Missouri State as well as a master's degree in Athletic Administration in 1982. Hewitt completed his doctorate in sports management at SIUC in 1994.
Hewitt has been an highly-active member of the area community, serving as a member of the board of directors for the St. Louis Sports Commission since 1999, a member of the board of directors for the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Governors for the Prairie State Games and as the current president of the Edwardsville High School Football Booster Club.
A member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, Hewitt also has been a module presenter for SIUE's Kimmel Leadership Center.
