June 16, 2008 SIUE Finishes 14th in the NACDA Directors Cup EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - With a strong finish from softball, track and field and men's tennis, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville intercollegiate athletics program finished 14th in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup among NCAA Division II schools. "This tops off another great season for the Cougars. We have enjoyed a great deal of success over a variety of sports. It really shows in how much of a broad-based program that SIUE has become," said Dr. Brad Hewitt, SIUE Director of Athletics. SIUE placed fifth at the Division II women's outdoor track and field under Coach Dave Astrauskas. SIUE earned 75 points in the Directors' Cup scoring system, highlighted by an individual national championship by hurdler Deserea Brown. The Cougars also scored substantial points for its NCAA appearances from men's track and field, softball and men's tennis. SIUE finished in the top 15 in each of the last three seasons as the Cougars continue their transition to NCAA Division I play. The Cougars placed fourth in 2005-2006 and 11th in 2006-2007. The Cougars earned points towards the Directors' Cup in all three seasons. The SIUE volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season and were led by All-American setter Mallory Clements. The SIUE men's soccer team advanced to the Great Lakes Regional Championship game for the fourth straight year. Ed Huneke's final season as the Cougar head coach ended with an 11-4-3 record. SIUE's winter season was highlighted by the indoor teams for track and field. The SIUE women's track and field team brought home a fourth-place trophy after winning a national championship by the 1,600-meter relay team. The SIUE men's track and field team placed 15th nationally. The U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.
