June 19, 2007 SIUE Finishes 11th in the NACDA Directors Cup EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - With a softball national title leading the way, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville intercollegiate athletics program finished 11th in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup among NCAA Division II schools. "We are extremely pleased with the results and the success of student-athletes and coaching staff. It has been another great year," said Dr. Brad Hewitt, SIUE Director of Athletics. SIUE won its first national title in softball under Coach Sandy Montgomery after winning 16 consecutive games to complete the season. It was the 17th national championship in the school's history, winning seven titles in men's tennis, four in women's tennis, three in wrestling and two in men's soccer. One of the two men's soccer championships was the 1979 NCAA Division I Championship. "Last year we finished fourth in the Directors' Cup but did not win the Great Lakes Valley Conference's All-Sports Trophy or Commissioner's Cup. This year we won both conference trophies but finished 11th nationally," said Hewitt. The Cougars experienced another outstanding season from beginning to end. Along with softball, the SIUE volleyball and men's soccer teams advanced to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship game. The women's track and field team placed sixth at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships and 10th at the Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The volleyball team ended the season with an all-time best 29-6 record and a No. 14 season-ending national ranking by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Both Mallory Clements (Mt. Pulaski) and Kim Potthast (St. Rose) were named All-Americans. The men's soccer team went to overtime in the regional championship game and completed the season with a 15-4-3 record. The Cougars were ranked eighth in the nation as John Matthews (Edwardsville) was named an All-American and the Defensive Player of the Year for the GLVC. SIUE finished second nationally in attendance. Deserea Brown led the Cougars in women's track and field, earning six All-American certificates during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Her best finish was runner-up in the heptathlon at the outdoor championships. Coach David Astrauskas oversaw GLVC Championships in men's and women's track and field this season. The SIUE baseball, men's track and field, women's basketball, and wrestling teams also earned points for SIUE in the Directors' Cup, which bases its standings on team finishes in the NCAA Championships. The Cougar baseball team made its 22nd appearance in the NCAA Division II Championships. Coach Gary Collins also became just the 10th person in Division II baseball ever to record 900 victories. The men's track and field team placed 29th at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships and 25th at the Outdoor Championships. Kyle Rose (Kankakee) led the Cougars with All-American honors in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Coach Wendy Hedberg led the Cougar women's basketball team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2000-2001 season. Amber Shelton (Edwardsville) was named All-American after averaging a team-leading 19.4 scoring average. SIUE finished the season with a 20-9 record. SIUE wrestler John Ficht (Burbank) won one match at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. His efforts helped SIUE to a 27th-place finish nationally. SIUE men's golfer Kyle Lickenbrock also turned in a strong finish at the NCAA Division II Championships. He placed 27th as an individual at the four-day championship event. The U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Ala., is the program sponsor. -siue cougars- |
