June 18, 2007 Hardiek, Marcum Named GLVC Scholar-Athletes EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville standouts Mike Hardiek (Teutopolis) and Blake Marcum (Centralia) were named Great Lakes Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports. Hardiek, a member of the men's basketball team, and Marcum, a member of the men's track and field team, were voted on by the faculty academic representatives of the conference's 14 institutions. A computer science major, Hardiek helped the Cougars to a 15-12 record in 2006-2007 while averaging a team-leading 16.7 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game. In addition, Hardiek led the team in three-point field goal percentage (44.3%) and free throw percentage (83.5%) and was named honorable mention All-GLVC. He was ranked 11th in the GLVC in scoring during the year and 17th in rebounding. Hardiek carries a 3.484 cumulative grade point average, was named Academic All-GLVC and was selected to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Third Team. Marcum helped SIUE to GLVC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships and to a 25th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2007. Marcum, the GLVC champion in the 1,500-meter run, placed 19th in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He established a new conference record in the 1,500-meter run at the GLVC Outdoor Championships by finishing the event in a time of 3 minutes, 51.77 seconds. A biological sciences major at SIUE, he boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.765. Marcum was named an All-American Scholar and was selected by his teammates as a Cougar Cadre award winner. -siue cougars- |
