DeShasier, Bilbruck Tabbed for NCAA Degree Completion Award
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Alicia DeShasier (Carrollton) and Dustin Bilbruck (Gillespie) have been chosen to receive an NCAA Division II Degree-Completion Award.
According to the NCAA, the program provides "financial assistance to deserving student-athletes with completion of a first baccalaureate degree. Candidates will be students who have exhausted their athletics eligibility and have received athletics financial aid."
DeShasier, a Civil Engineering major, and Bilbruck, an Elementary Education major, were tabbed by the NCAA, which emphasizes academic performance in the selection process.
DeShasier, the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year for softball, was a first-team All-American selection by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. DeShasier batted .434 with a team-leading nine home runs, 49 runs batted in, 54 runs scored and 48 stolen bases.
The SIUE softball team won its first NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship and finished with a 52-11 record.
Bilbruck qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May, placing ninth in the event. SIUE placed seventh nationally at the national outdoor meet. The 2005 outdoor Great Lakes Valley Conference champion in the long jump, Bilbruck scored points in four events at the 2006 GLVC Outdoor meet.
