"Cougar Cup"-Life Skills Challenge for Student-Athletes
The Life Skills Challenge for the "Cougar Cup" will be played by all varsity athletic teams at SIUE. Student-Athletes, representing their team will compete against other teams for points in six different categories. The competition focuses on developing the individual student-athlete, teamwork, support for other athletes, academic achievement, and community involvement. It is our hope that teams will use this as a tool to see how they compare to other teams in different categories and then in turn set team goals to put them at the top of the competition. Student-Athletes earn points for their team by doing things they already do, but now they can compete with each other! At the end of the year, the team with the most points overall wins the Cougar Cup! Teams with the highest score in each individual category will be recognized as well. Points will be tallied monthly and displayed on a bulletin board in the Athletic Department so that each team is aware of where they stand and how many points they have earned. Points will be earned as follows: Team/Personal Development This category gives credit to those students who want to better themselves or their teams. Student-Athletes may earn points for attending Cougar Life Skills workshops and presentations during the course of the year. There will be 2 Life Skills programs per month to choose from including programs on study skills, leadership, nutrition, team building, career planning, stress management, substance abuse, and sexual responsibility. 15 pts if 75% (or 15 members) or more of a team attends. 1 pt. for individual participants. (15 points max) Community Service Student-Athletes or teams may earn points for participating in either organized community service projects through the Life Skills program, or a project organized by their team. This category is very important and one that every student-athlete should attempt to become involved with. SIUE student-athletes have a big impact on the community's youth, and it is to our advantage to continue building relationships with the community. 15 pts. for a team project with at least 75% of the team participating (or 15 members) 1 pt. for individual participants (15 pts. max) Athletes Supporting Athletes Every team wishes they had more fan support! Athletes supporting athletes is a great way to bring the entire athletic department together and move us forward in our pursuit of the GLVC All-Sports Trophy. Student-Athletes can earn points for their team by attending other team's games, matches, etc. They can also earn points for doing something for another team prior to their competition (ex. making posters). 15 pts. for having 75% (or 15 people) or more of your team at another team's HOME competition. 20 pts for having 75% (or 15 people) or more of your team at another team's AWAY competition. 5 pts. for acts of encouragement (posters, locker room decoration, etc.). SAAC Involvment Student-Athletes can earn points for their team by attending monthly SAAC meetings and for participating in SAAC sponsored events like Community Day or Kids Night Out. Having each team represented at every SAAC meeting promotes better communication among the teams, the athletic administration and the community. 2 pts. per team that is represented at SAAC meetings each month (5 pts. if both representatives are present) 10 pts. per team (if 75 %/ or 15 members) that participants in a SAAC event. 1 pt. per individual student-athlete who participates in a SAAC event (10 pts. max) Team Grade Point Average/Dean's List Academics are of the utmost importance at SIUE and many of our teams continue to win in the classroom. The teams with the highest team Grade Point Average after fall grades will be awarded points. Teams will also be awarded points for every person on the Dean's List. 15 pts. to the Men's Team with the highest GPA 15 pts. to the Women's Team with the highest GPA 2 pts. for every person on the Dean's List Miscellaneous Category The Academic Advisor for Athletics/Life Skills Coordinator can give points to individual student-athletes or teams that do something extraordinary, which does not fit into one of the other categories. Coaches, athletes and administrators can make recommendations.
