Nearly 1,200 students are expected to receive degrees at the spring commencement ceremony Saturday, May 6.

Commencement will begin at 9 a.m. in the Vadalabene Center gymnasium for the Colleges of Business and Education and at 1 p.m. in the VC gymnasium for the College of Arts and Sciences and the Colleges of Engineering and Nursing.

SIU Emeritus Chancellor James M. Brown will receive the SIUE Distinguished Service Award at the ceremony.

Honorary doctor of humane letters degrees will also be awarded to English professor emeritus William T. Going and history professor emeritus Patrick W. Riddleberger.

Brown was an SIUE faculty member of the department of English language and literature before becoming an administrator in the SIU system.

In 1979 Brown was appointed vice chancellor of SIU and became chancellor in 1991.

Going was involved in the beginning of what would become SIUE while serving at the SIU service center in Alton. He helped develop the university's curriculum and enrolled the first class at the Alton campus.

Going has received the Outstanding Educator of America Award and the SIUE President's Award of Merit.

Riddleberger, who has also received the SIUE President's Award of Merit, joined the SIUE faculty in 1960. He has also been awarded the SIUE Outstanding Professor Award, the SIUE Teaching Excellence Award for senior faculty and the SIUE Alumni Association's Great Teacher Award.

Going will deliver the commencement address at the 9 a.m. ceremony and Riddleberger will give the address at 1 p.m.

Graduates and their families are invited to a graduation celebration from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 4, in the Student Fitness Center.
