Less than a year after buying the rights from the World Wrestling Federation to develop games, THQ has released its first WWF game. It bodyslams the competition.
THQ had had great success in the wrestling game genre with World Championship Wrestling. The game features more than 50 WWF superstars, including Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and Mankind.
Whether you are playing by yourself or with friends, Wrestlemania 2000 has enough features to keep players happy. Single players can wrestle exhibition matches, participate in tournaments or battle through an entire "season" in the WWF. Multiple players can battle to see who is best in tournaments or battle royals.
THE GOOD
Control: I have yet to play a THQ wrestling game on Nintendo 64 with poor controls. WWF 2000's simulation controls make the game easy and fun to play.
Moves: If there is a wrestling move, it is probably in the game. The massive variety of moves helps to keep the game fresh, which many other wrestling games lack.
Character Creation: This game features one of the most extensive character creation modes that I have ever seen. You can customize everything from the look of your wrestlers to every move they use.
THE NOT-SO-GOOD
Season Mode: Playing the season mode lets you play a "season" in the WWF. The "season" is a year, which starts in May. I was bored with the mode by July. While the mode is a first for the genre, I just could not see myself playing the entire season.
REALLY UGLY
Game Engine: This is my biggest problem with WWF Wrestlemania 2000. THQ used the same game engine of WCW/NWO Revenge, so the look and feel of the game has not changed a bit.
THE STRAIGHT DOPE
Being a longtime wrestling fan, I felt the need to try the game. What I found was by far the best wrestling game that I have ever played. While the game is basically an updated version of WCW/NWO Revenge, it is still by far the heavyweight champion of wrestling games as far as I'm concerned.
