Comedians provide non-stop laughs
By Marlin Thomas Laughter erupted Friday night from the University Center conference room. Sonya 'D' and Corey Holcomb, were the featured comedians and they were hilarious.
The emcee of the event was Majic 108's Doc Love. Love kicked off a joke-filled night accented with silliness and a biting wit.
Corey Holcomb, a 27-year-old native from Chicago, has appeared in clubs and on campuses throughout much of Illinois. He is most noted for his appearance on Russell Simmon's Def Comedy Jam.
Years ago Holcomb was just a average student.
"I was a four-year student at a two-year school," Holcomb jokingly said.
His stage time consisted of "What if...?" jokes and funny snaps at the audience. He had humor that dealt with different aspects of life. His silliness was humor at its best.
Who is Holcomb influenced by?
"My mother and everybody I meet. I plan to keep on working around," Holcomb added.
Sonya 'D' only echoed Holcomb's performance. The room quaked with laughter even more with her delivery.
This 26-year-old extraordinarily funny woman reached her crowd with catchy lines about how men and women should act, and the crazy things they do.
Her comic style was fast and grabbing and she brought you all the way in to her jokes.
Ironically, Sonya 'D' never had ambitions of being a comedian. She wanted to be a singer. She also held a number of odd jobs.
"I did some accounting for a business and I was a truck driver," Sonya 'D' said.
"I got into a competition in '94 and I did well," 'D' added.
Engaging in this competition would launch her comedy career. Since then she has appeared on Def Comedy Jam and It's Showtime at the Apollo. She has also appeared in many clubs and theaters, and on college campuses.
"Next year, I am supposed to be doing a sitcom with Warner Bros.," 'D' added.
Sonya 'D' also offered advice to newcomers on the comic scene.
"Never give up, always go with your gut feeling because it is never wrong," she said.
The night was filled with fun and laughter, accentuated by some live entertainment.
SIUE student Melodie Graves serenaded the crowd with Whitney Houston's "Miracle", and members of Iota Phi Theta, Upsilon Chapter, from SIU Carbondale performed an original step routine that was excellent. Overall, the night was a great evening of entertainment for all. I foresee a bright and productive career for both comedians. |
