The red carpet will be rolled out and the stars will exit their limousines. The fashion police will enter the scene of the 73rd Academy Awards on Sunday.
Last year's awards ceremony brought out many fresh new ideas and experiments. Many will never forget the co-creators of "South Park," Trey Parker and Matt Stone, as they made their way onto the carpet in plunging necklines and high heels. Parker pulled off the Jennifer Lopez jade evening gown from the Grammys while Stone mimicked Gwyneth Paltrow's winning pink dress from the previous year.
Apparently Jennifer Lopez set the trend last year while wearing the V-neck slit jade gown to the 2000 Grammys. Salma Hayek, Charlize Theron, Chole Sevigny and Cameron Diaz showed up in the plummeting neckline that almost bared all.
Red seemed to be out of the mix last year as most of the women showed up in neutral tones such as silver or different shades of brown and black.
Many celebrities present at last year's award show wore off-the-shoulder dresses and dangling jewels. Vera Wang and Versace gowns were spread all over the carpet as elegance and old-fashioned glamour took precedence over the crude and bizarre attire.
Both Cher and Angelina Jolie decided to take a different direction with a fashion statement as they both looked like they stepped out of a bat cave by sporting the Goth-look. Jolie had her hair dyed black, and Cher's hair seemed to be tangled into a spider web on the top of her head.
The classy Dame Judi Dench looked, of course, fashionably conservative, sticking with her old stand-by of a long beaded coat in silver.
Ashley Judd looked beautifully classy as she wore a lilac clingy gown that seemed to fit every curve. Accompanying her glamorous look was a simple up-do for her hair and a frosty lilac eye shadow to match her dress.
This year the red carpet will be filled with Versace, Wang and Chanel gowns as the stars light up the sky over Hollywood. Be on the lookout for the classic and traditional looks again along with light colors. It seems that full skirts and busy prints are out and sleek and sexy is in. Watch for "Charlie's Angels" and the normal crew such as the always-elegant Julia Roberts, Halle Berry and Judd as they make their way up the carpet, but also keep an eye on the young such as Kate Hudson and Julia Stiles as they are sure to bring a new look and new excitement to the fashion world. But do not forget to be aware of the crazy stuff that may be going on. You never know what Benicio Del Toro or Joaquin Phoenix might show up in.
