The Alestle brought home an unprecedented nine awards this weekend from the annual Illinois College Press Association convention in Chicago.
In competition with 26 other schools, the Alestle took third place for the "Stickman" cartoons drawn by Cynthia Kruchten.
Alestle Sports Editor Kumar Bhooshan won first place in sports news writing among nondaily papers at schools with more than 4,000 students.
His winning entry was a story about delays in getting the tennis courts ready in time for the team's home opener.
Photo Editor Sheri McWhirter earned a second-place award in general news photos with her picture of U.S. Army skydivers over SIUE.
McWhirter also took third place for a feature photo of a rainy day on the campus.
She also earned three honorable mentions for pictures in news and sports and for a photo essay on Springfest.
Graphics assistant Andrew Lehman won two third-place awards. His feature story on the unsolved murder of an SIUE graduate in 1969 was a winner as was his page design for a story about the National Scenic Byway that begins in Alton.
