Lady Cougar soccer defeats Indianapolis, ties Northern Kentucky over the weekend
The women's soccer team added another win and a tie to its conference record this weekend.
The Lady Cougars still sitting on top of the Great Lakes Valley Conference at 7-0-1, 11-3-1 overall, with a nine-game winning streak.
The Lady Cougars defeated the University of Indianapolis and tied with Northern Kentucky University this past weekend away from home.
On Friday the Cougars managed yet another shutout. SIUE beat the University of Indianapolis 3-0.
"We really came to play Friday," coach Brian Korbesmeyer said. "We were all over them and our backfield played an excellent game again."
Sophomore Colleen Creamer scored her seventh goal of the season in the first half on an assist from teammate Emily Anderson.
"Colleen is just so dangerous no matter where she's at, and she has that ability with her speed to get in the attack and cause problems," Korbesmeyer said. "She's making better decisions all the time whether to shoot or pass."
Leslie Henigman scored next for the Lady Cougars in the 26th minute of play assisted by Sara Decker and Becky Baker.
Decker scored the third goal for the Lady Cougars, her sixth of the season, assisted by Megan Steward and Creamer.
"I couldn't keep her (Decker) out of the lineup," Korbesmeyer said. "But as the statistics prove, Sara really makes things happen."
Senior goalkeeper Beth Louderman, who was last week's GLVC women's soccer Player of the Week, recorded nine saves in the game.
"We got a little nervous in a 10-minute span in the second half where we kind of got out of our game plan and lost our concentration," Korbesmeyer said. "But for the most part, it was really one of our better games."
The Lady Greyhounds now stand at 3-3 in the GLVC.
After a day's rest, SIUE traveled onward to Highland Heights, Ky., Sunday to play Northern Kentucky, the fourth-ranked team in the nation.
"I reminded them of the SIU tradition of playing big games against big teams, Korbesmeyer said. "We won't take a back seat to anybody on our schedule."
"As the minutes until the game got closer, the excitement in the girls was building," Korbesmeyer said.
Northern Kentucky came out firing with Lori Kevill scoring the first goal in the 27th minute on an assist from Amanda Trout.
SIUE's Anderson scored her third goal of the season nearly two minutes later and would be the only offensive highlight of the game.
The game, featuring the two top conference foes, ended in a 1-1 tie.
NKU moved to 11-1-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the conference. The Lady Norse attempted two shots on goal to the Lady Cougars 10 attempts. Louderman had five saves.
Korbesmeyer said was proud of the way his team played.
"Heart, guts and desire. And you can't teach that," Korbesmeyer said. "All the players gave everything they had."
The Lady Cougars' next match will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the University of Missouri St.Louis.....
