Students could be seen marching across campus carrying signs and chanting in protest of SIUE's Parking Services Thursday afternoon.
The group was assistant sociology professor Jennifer Hamer's race and ethnic relations class, and the protest was an assignment.
"We've been learning about social movements, and these students are learning about how easy or difficult it is to start a social movement," graduate assistant Kate Marchioro said.
The students asked passers-by to fill out a two-question survey about Parking Services. The survey asked if students had problems with Parking Services and if the students would be willing to participate if a protest were formally conducted. Students were also asked to give a phone number or e-mail address where they could be reached. According to Marchioro, this was done to demonstrate that while some people have concerns, they are not willing to take an active part in changing the situation.
The class was divided into five groups that spread out across campus. Each group focused on different aspects of Parking Services, such as universal parking or the cost of campus parking.
Sophomore Janel Jones, who acquired $80 in parking fines within the first two weeks of the fall semester, said she hopes the project will raise awareness about the issues surrounding campus parking....
