Lady Cougars now look toward ITA regionals and GLVC tourney

On Tuesday the women's tennis team capped off its 2000 regular season the way it started.

The Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Hawks of Quincy University 8-1.

"Everything went right for us," coach Bill Logan said.

The Lady Cougars won five out of six matches in singles play with only Gretchen DeLaney, losing in a tough three set tiebreaker to Quincy's Becky Postle, 6-4, 3-6, (7-3).

In singles, Kim Mulherin defeated Leah Marsot easily, 6-2, 6-0.

"Kim played as well as she could have," Logan said.

Mulherin, the lone senior on the team, has a 5-2 record in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

"She served well, she hit well," Logan said. "Everything just seemed to work out for her."

Laura Zeeb went into three sets as well with Maggie Schuering, 2-6, 6-2, taking the third set 7-1.

Zeeb was a Lady Hawk before transferring to SIUE.

"Anytime you play your old team or play people you know, it's tough," Logan said.

Zeeb, a sophomore, has posted a 5-2 GLVC record.

"This is a good win for Laura and really boosted her confidence," Logan said.

Amber Stanley also had no problem defeating her Lady Hawk opponent Sarah Hardin 6-0, 6-2.

Coryn Reich defeated Susan Bangert, 6-4, 6-2.

Keli Keener split the first two sets 6-4, 7-6 with Alyssa Para of Quincy then claimed the third in a 8-6 tiebreaker.

The win now puts Keener at 4-4 in the GLVC.

SIUE also grabbed all three of the doubles matches as well.

The team of Mulherin and Reich defeated Quincy's Marsot and Hardin easily 8-1.

Stanley and Zeeb defeated Bangert and Para 8-3. Keener and Kelly Wohltman defeated the team of Schuering and Postle 8-5.

"We have made some adjustments in doubles to work out the kinks for conference," Logan said.

The loss drops Quincy to 3-6 in the conference.

The win propels the Lady Cougars to a 7-2 GLVC record, putting them in third place overall in the conference.

Friday through Sunday, the Lady Cougars will travel to Indianapolis for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament.

The tournament, held every year, consists of 17 states in the Midwest.

The outcome determines regional and national rankings.

The 64-player draw will include SIUE's top four players.

Mulherin, who with Lady Cougar graduate Sarah Hardimon last year, made it all the way to the doubles finals.

Zeeb will also travel to Indianapolis with a No. 2 seeding.

Logan will also be taking his two freshmen, Stanley, who received a No. 1 ranking, and Reich, who ranked No. 2 in the tournament.

Stanley currently has a 6-2 conference record and Reich is 6-1 in the GLVC.

On Oct. 13 and 14 SIUE will be the host for the GLVC tournament at the new tennis courts..
