It's crunch time for the Lady Cougars golf team.
The Great Lakes Valley Championships are quickly approaching.
SIUE will play Monday and Tuesday in Columbus, Ind., at the Timber Gate Golf Course.
The Lady Cougars will be allowed to take only five individuals to the championships, and head coach Larry Bennett is still unsure whom he will be taking.
But Bennett is leaning toward his five usual starters: Katie Farrell, Kacy Gruenkemeyer, Nonie Ehlke, Spring Riley and Kristi Novak.
"That's pretty well the lineup that's been shooting the scores that we need," Bennett said. "They're shooting low pretty consistently,"
The Lady Cougars will be facing some tough competition, mainly from the defending champion, the University of Indianapolis.
Other teams fighting for first place include Bellarmine College, Northern Kentucky University and the University of Southern Indiana.
"I'm real happy with the way we've progressed since this summer," Bennett said. "I didn't expect this with a team of mostly freshmen, but they've got the potential."
The Lady Cougars are coming off an impressive finish at the Indianapolis Invitational. SIUE finished just behind conference foe Bellarmine for seventh place. The Lady Cougars beat Northern Kentucky for the first time ever.
Farrell had another record-setting weekend.
She broke her own school record, set just two weeks ago, by shooting 80 in the second round. Farrell also tied another school record she's holding by shooting 167 in 36 holes.
"Eventually she's going to help bring some of the other girls' scores down as well because they're going to go with her," Bennett said.
Farrell finished tied for ninth overall with 167. She was followed by teammates Gruenkemeyer with 177, Ehlke with 179, Riley with 180 and Novak with 188.
SIUE will begin play on Monday afternoon for the conference title.
"It's really going to be a dogfight. It's anybody's tournament," Bennett said...
